Leak Detection

Leak Detection

Compressed air generation is a major contributor to the overall cost of maintaining a manufacturing facility.

Problems caused by leaks can include:

  • higher electricity bills
  • pressure drops that affect downstream processes and equipment
  • product defects resulting in flaws or contamination
  • increased load on compressors

A leak management programme can include advantages such as:

  • continuous and significant energy cost reduction
  • increased equipment life through load reduction (reduction in service/call out repair costs)
  • productivity improvements from maintaining higher system pressures
  • compliance with legislation when incorporated with other regulations
  • safety improvements through early detection

Detecting air escapes

A very specific frequency (38Khz) is generated when compressed air leaks from piping and this is a consistent frequency regardless of other aspects e.g. size of leak, pressure, temperature or humidity. This consistent frequency allows leaks to be detected ultrasonically without background noises distorting the measurement.

Our experienced service team uses the most sophisticated ultrasonic detecting equipment to survey your compressed air distribution pipe work:

  • air leaks are identified using the latest sensory equipment
  • leaks up to 50m away are detected
  • high level piping can be tested

When an air leak has been detected, the exact source is pinpointed, logged and tagged. We then provide the client with an estimate of repair costs, which the client is able to balance against the cost of the leak itself. This gives the client full control over leak repair prioritisation. There is no interruption whatsoever to factory production or machinery while we carry out these detection checks.
The survey forms the basis of a comprehensive report which:

  • estimates consequential cost of the leak
  • recommends a solution
  • indicates likely savings
